Power House Inspiration

For a spring Chester Rotary event I donated a Bundle Certificate for a doll of choice. Our sweet new neighbors, Ed and Joan won. A couple weeks after the event, Ed shared pictures of Justice Ginsburg who grew up with his mom in Brooklyn. Sure, I’ll make her. This was April 11, 2018; the doll was finished and delivered on Sunday, September 3 in time for them to enjoy the CNN presentation of RBG on Labor Day. They were thrilled as was the doll artist.

Poor Ruth lay naked with her American flag body and star legs—embroidered finely through our amazing process by Eileen and assembled and wigged perfectly. The robe remained a puzzle. The fabric was a wonderful crepe and the white petticoat would feature her hallmark lace collar. First I chose the wrong lace so I did it over to be more authentic. Having just done a Sushi doll kimono, the robe simply became a sizing matter, which I dreamed up while asleep. Bingo. It worked.

In my personal tribute to RBG, her story is featured in the September Bonnie’s Bundles Dolls’ display in the Vermont Welcome Center in Guilford. While setting up, I engaged many visitors in this accomplishment. As many as we have had displays in Vermont Welcome Centers, this one is the best. So now as we await visitors, I am inspired to create “Harriett the Hoot” whose face has owl eyes. Her clothes are coming together in pattern and colors! Dream on!
